Flood watch

Message # 2026-02
Issued:  3:30 p.m., Thursday January 22, 2026

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE | A FLOOD WATCH is being issued for watercourses within the jurisdiction of Otonabee Conservation including Otonabee River, upper Trent River to Hastings and local watercourses.

A Flood Watch has been issued for municipalities along the Trent-Severn Waterway and local water courses within the jurisdiction of Otonabee Conservation. Extreme cold temperatures, combined with limited ice cover and turbulent flows on the Otonabee River, upper Trent River and local watercourses, may lead to the formation of frazil ice, which can increase the risk of localized flooding.

Frazil ice, a kind of slush ice, occurs when temperatures drop below freezing but solid ice cannot form because of the fast, turbulent water. Where frazil ice accumulates it is likely to cause a restriction of water flow which may cause increased water levels and potential for flooding.

Residents are encouraged to stay informed by monitoring weather updates and water levels.

Water levels can be monitored on-line at:
1)    Trent-Severn Waterway’s Water Management InfoNet
2)    Water Survey of Canada Real-Time Hydrometric Data
3)    Otonabee Conservation website
