Find out if a property is located in a vulnerable area

The Clean Water Act was created in 2006 to protect the sources of water that supply municipal drinking water systems, now and in the future. 

To achieve this, 19 source protection regions were identified across Ontario. The Trent Conservation Coalition Source Protection Region and a local Committee were established to develop a plan to  reduce or eliminate threats to municipal drinking water sources. The Otonabee-Peterborough Source Protection Area is one of five areas in the Region.

The Trent Source Protection Plan came into effect on January 1, 2015 and includes policies to protect sources of municipal drinking water by managing the risks related to 22 drinking water threats including activities related to sewage, waste, fuel, pesticides, agriculture, snow storage, and road salt.  Protecting drinking water sources is a shared responsibility and involves provincial ministries, municipalities, conservation authorities, landowners and tenants.

Vulnerable Areas near municipal drinking water systems have been identified and policies in the Trent Source Protection Plan may apply in these areas. 

Buyers and sellers should know if a property is located in a vulnerable area that is subject to Source Protection Plan policies.  

The Trent Source Protection Plan policies apply to the following Municipal Drinking Water Systems in the Otonabee-Peterborough Source Protection Area:

A Drinking Water Threat is an activity that can impact the quality or quantity of a municipal drinking water source. The province has established a list of 22 Drinking Water Threat activities.

The presence of a drinking water threat activity does not mean the municipal drinking water source has been or is at risk of contamination.

The Trent Source Protection Plan policies use a variety of tools to address Drinking Water Threat activities and protect municipal drinking water sources including:

• Education and Outreach
• Land Use Planning
• Risk Management Plans
