Practices for achieving safe conditions while reducing salt use include:
- Proactive snow and ice control
- Pairing salt use with snow removal
- Using variable application rates based on weather conditions and traffic
- ‘Smart about Salt’ and/or Ontario Good Roads Association training/certification
- Using carbide reinforced plow blades that conform to the road and more effectively remove snow
- Using sand, sand/salt mixes, low/no chloride products or other de-icers that can be combined with salt to reduce the amount needed.
